Better Births Gloucestershire (2016-2021)

In February 2016 Better Births set out the Five Year Forward View for NHS maternity services in England. This clear vision was for maternity services across England to become safer, more personalised, kinder, professional and more family friendly.

We have been working with partners across the health and care system, with service users and the voluntary sector to develop our plan, setting out a shared view of what maternity services should look like in Gloucestershire in the future.

Our priorities

  • Work with women to ensure we provide them with choice and personalised care
  • Work with women, families and stakeholders to improve postnatal care
  • Ensure we hear the views and experiences from our diverse communities across Gloucestershire
  • Develop community hubs, joining up services that support women and families in the early years, including health visiting and children’s services
  • Support the Saving Babies Lives initiative, aiming to reduce stillbirths via smoking cessation and the monitoring of movements and growth of babies
  • Work with public health and the new Healthy Lifestyles service to ensure support is available to improve the health and well-being of women
  • Develop an integrated specialist perinatal mental health service to ensure that women and families with complex mental health needs consistently receive the support that they need

Our achievements so far

We are now three years into the five year programme and already have much to be proud of. Over 30 projects have been developed to improve services, deliver innovations transform maternity services in our county.

  • The launch of our new antenatal education offer, which has been extended to include additional sessions at times that work for local people
  • The development of over a dozen short information films showcasing the services that are on offer in Gloucestershire and allowing families to share their experiences of our maternity services
  • A specialist Perinatal Mental Health Team now offers support to women
  • We are working closely with Gloucestershire County Council on an innovative targeted contraception pilot, where midwives are offering contraception to vulnerable women, trying to avoid unwanted pregnancies in the future
  • Additionally we are working closely with Public Health and are now able to offer a more focused Healthy Lifestyle offer for pregnant women, to support a reduction in smoking and support around weight, helping women to live more healthily
